The Hero’s Journey Project
In The Hero’s Journey Project, students selected a novel and formed a book club to discuss how Joseph Campbell’s framework of the hero’s journey could be used to understand how writers construct protagonists, narratives and evoke empathy.
Visible thinking was a critical component. Having studied sketchnoting techniques from Mike Rohde’s inspiring text The Sketchnote Handbook: The Illustrated Guide to Visual Note Taking, students analyzed textual evidence by experimenting with visual annotation using images, text and keywords to unlock meaning. Their visual annotations were presented to their book club and used for discussion points. These inferencing sketchnotes became their guide, supporting their thinking as they wrote their literary essay.
